AdaptingConclusion-Computers are changing the world as we know i t, and they offer an exciting new way of working. The news represented a complete turnaround for the corporate giant. Microsoft Chairperson, Bill Gates publicly announced his companys new connection to the Internet. The announcement rang through the nation. Gates has consistently ignored the Internet in favor of desktop computing. So, with Microsofts approval, computers kicked into even higher gear (Gates, 72). The pace of innovation continues to astonish even those involved from the start. If one wants to find enthusiasm, intellect, hard work, and imagination; then computers is the place to be (DAngelo, 49). Computer engineers build and design computers and computer-related media (OCIS). A constantly changing career, computer engineering is offering more jobs now than ever before (Butler, 33). Webmaster, HTML programmer, JAVA programmer, Online Content Developer. Five years ago such job titles didnt exist, but then neither didthe work thousands of people are engaged in today (Marcus, 54). Once upon a time, computer programmers and electrical engineers were the only computer-related jobs. Now more jobs such as marketing, sales, product development, human resources and finance have joined the list of technological jobs (Moran and Hornung, 43). There has been a surprising change in society, which computer engineering has brought about (Moran and Hornung, 43). The Internet in particular is changing every activity of our daily lives. Today just about every advertisement on television, radio and in print, carries a web address. It is not unusual for consumers to research a purchase on the Internet before buying. Websites offer thousands of pages of detailed information. Chat rooms and news groups attract many people with opinions that they want to share (Marcus, 54-55). Schools are even online. Homework assignments are posted over the Internet. High-school students fill out college applications and submit them with a click of a mouse. There are chat rooms and news groups for everything imaginable. Books, watches, recordings, clothes, shoes, crafts and vacations are sold over Internet. Even churches rage their members to log on for their latest news (Marcus, 55). Last year, new technology made it possible for millions of Intern et users to listen to speeches or traditional radio programs on their computers. That is, thanks to RealAudio, a technology which converts radio into digital sound. If that werent enough, video broadcasts and video-conferencing are being done over the Internet rather than by traditional means (Marcus, 55). The newest versions of web browsers allow people all over the world to hold video-conferences and do other tasks simultaneously (Marcus, 55). Businesses worldwide have learned to take advantage of the technology and have begunto work 24 hours a day. Work started in the far east can be sent west and onward before the sun sets (DAngelo, 50). .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .postImageUrl , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:hover , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:visited , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:active { border:0!important; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:active , .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5a2c09f38bf8c0c82a49fd096f0bd52c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Collaboration Observation EssayAs with any new industry, the first job holders gained the most advantage (Butler, 23). In its beginning, computer engineering welcomed anyone who was smart and eager to learn (Laurance, 19). People taught themselves the skills needed to create web pages(DAngelo, 50). They came to computer engineering with degrees in physics, English, marketing, biology, journalism, graphic design and maybe computer science. They might have had experience working in television production or as a newspaper editor. Their knowledge and experience grew with the industry (Laurance, 21). Now some companies wont hire anyone without HTML skills (DAngelo, 51). Others are demanding several years of prior experience in a computer-related field (Laurance, 23). The job outlook for computer engineering looks promising. There are many opportunities for work in computer engineering. Though experienced talent is available, and is highly sought after, it is limited (Johnson, Interview). One of an employers major challenges today is keeping talented employees from moving to another firm. Companies are working with universities and colleges to shape course work so it will produce a people to fill positions to fit their needs (DAngelo, 52-53). Typically, training for computer engineering requires a two-year associates degree or an 18-month certification program from a technical college (DAngelo, 54). The best technical colleges in the country tend to be located in the larger cities, for they haveupdated training centers. Colleges in the northeast, around Boston for example, are decent technical institutes to attend. Of course, there is also Silicon Valley, and many places on the west coast that offer the very best education (Johnson, Interview). However, there aremany other schools throughout the country that have excellent training centers for computer-related occupations (Blair, Interview). Be careful when selecting a school, as computer engineer labels many workers in the computer industry. Be sure to read the course descriptions of whatever university that you choose (OCIS). Anyone working in computer engineering can look forward to a great ride, working with imaginative people whose minds are constantly thinking of ne w ideas (Johnson, Interview). Salaries continue to increase as time goes on. Several surveys show that engineers working with computers can earn 50 percent more than other engineers (Butler, 67). Of course, the pay scale goes by how talented you are. This involves the amount of schooling and experience you have obtained (Johnson, Interview). The average salary for all computer engineers is about sixty to seventy thousand a year. More talented workers can make up to 200 hundred to 300 thousand a year (OCIS). Pay also reatlydepends on the area in which you work. People that work in larger cities, such as New York or Boston tend to make more money (Blair, Interview). There is room for incredible advancements in the computer industry. There are big opportunities and big money to be made by a computer engineer who lives and breathes a computer business passion. And to succeed in this business takes that kind of passion because the technology is changing by the hour (Johnson, Interview). A computerengineer is always on on the cutting edge of technology. Constant change makes computer engineering a demanding line of work. Every day offers new challenges and experiences, which relieves the boredom of the daily grind that many experience with other jobs. An engineer may spend one day helping design systems and the next giving technical support to the gentle consumer (Blair, Interview). Computer engineering offers variety. Work settings and hours are never uniform, which may not always be the best. There is little relaxation time in the computer world due to constant pressure and deadlines (Blair, Interview). Anyone wishing to work in the fieldmust be ready for long hours and maybe some uncomfortable working conditions. Some computer engineers work seventy to eighty hours a week (Johnson, Interview). Thats almost double of what the average occupation requires! It is also important to have the ability to grasp new ideas and adapt to them quickly. Somewhere in the world, at anymoment, a sharp-witted person is putting another new idea up on the web (DAngelo, 56). Modern technology is changing mankinds way of life, and at the forefront, computers are paving the way (Marcus, 56). New media and technology offer new, and exciting jobs allowing humans to live at the speed of light. Computers have advanced our civilization and from now on, nothing will ever be the same (Gate s, 75). One thing is certain. Computer engineering will not be the same five years from now . . . maybe not even in five minutes. .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .postImageUrl , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:hover , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:visited , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:active { border:0!important; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:active , .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0 .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud00128e6d78d29c6d259c1e58f7da7d0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Personal Failure EssayWorks CitedOhio Career Information Service. Why Your College Degree Is Worth It

Every year, it seems that more questions arise surrounding the importance of a college degree. From average salary after college to ease of employment, many are wondering whether it’s actually necessary to spend thousands and thousands for a degree. As it stands, about 86% of employed college graduates say that they currently have â€Å"career† jobs, compared to just 57% of high school diploma earners. However, the most recent Class of 2015 college graduates faced high rates of both unemployment and underemployment, and it seems as though future classes will face similar problems. Even given that, though, 89% of graduates agree: college is worth it. So what steps can current college students take to make their degree worth it?Take advantage of your career center. These days, colleges have great career centers. By talking with advisors and other staffers, you can get great help and reach out to alumni networks all over. Even if you aren’t sure exactly what industr y you want to get into, depending on your school, you can get personalized resume help and career advice. Be real but professional. College is the perfect place to be social. But, as we’ve mentioned in the past, colleges pay attention to who you are, and so do companies. It’s always good practice to clean up your social media and start your life as a professional. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have fun - but since you’re headed into the professional working world, it’s important to reflect that. Understand your interests. One of the first steps to finding a career that you’re passionate about is understanding yourself. Though you’re not expected to know what you want to do for the rest of your life, it’s much easier have a direction when applying to jobs. Otherwise, you might find yourself lost on what to do. Plenty of companies are more interested in people who are excited to work there, so finding a path to follow will help. Reach out to family, friends, and alumni. Is there a job or company that you already have in mind? While career centers are a great resource to use, networking can help a lot. Join LinkedIn (if you haven’t already), and reach out to family members, friends, former teachers, alumni, and whoever else you can think of. Keeping good relationships can help you find a job in the long run, and at the very least, provide you with great advice. Learn your craft. What are you good at? How about what you’re not as good at? Though you might not know it, being able to answer those two questions might just get you in the door for a second round job interview. It’s okay if you’re not good at everything - it’s more a matter of how you look to improve. Set aside an hour each day to really hone your skills, or take classes to help out. General Assembly, Khan Academy, edX, and more can give you quick and easy opportunities to brush up on or pick up a new topic or two.

Through The Tunnel Essay Research Paper Through free essay sample

Through The Tunnel Essay, Research Paper Through the Tunnel In Through the Tunnel by Doris Lessing, an eleven-year-old English male child is on holiday at an alien beach. Geting bored with the small kid # 8217 ; s beach, he goes to swim at a abandoned, more bouldery shore. He spots some older, more mature, and more developed native male childs plunging into the ocean and he joins them in an attempt to suit in. However, the older male childs ignore him and finally abandon him. He discovers after plunging into the sea, they swim through a tunnel in the stones and finally emerge on the other side. As the determined male child patterns the accomplishments needed to swim through the tunnel, he makes the journey from childhood to manhood. This narrative uses the tunnel to stand for a passageway from one location to another wholly different location. The Chunnel, a tunnel that was constructed from northern France to England, goes wholly under the English Channel. In the narrative, the male child begins on one side of the tunnel with all of his frights and beliefs of a kid. However, as he improves his swimming accomplishments, he develops the assurance to swim through the tunnel. He exits this tunnel with new beliefs. He is now a adult male. The narrative uses the tunnel to stand for loads or challenges needed to accomplish some end. In the narrative, it was necessary to do safe transition through the tunnel. The immature male child had to command his external respiration. He had to keep his breath. He had to set to the water’s force per unit area. Most of all, he had to command his fright with a sense of assurance. Without control of his fright vitamin E would certainly parish under the H2O. Like the Chunnel, much difficult work was needed. How did the builders keep the ocean oppressing the construction as The Chunnel was built? The narrative uses the darkness to stand for the fright of the unknown. When the immature male child eventually thinks he is ready to do his manner through the tunnel, he doesn # 8217 ; t even cognize where it leads or how far it really is. All he knows is that he must acquire through it. As he goes through the tunnel, its dark and he # 8217 ; s scared that the top of it might fall on him, oppressing him in a topographic point where cipher will happen him. Again with the Chunnel, when person rides it for the first clip, they cant aid but believe, # 8220 ; what if this tunnel collapses? # 8221 ; With all of the H2O on top of the tunnel makes the thought even scarier for first-timers. In the narrative Through the Tunnel the writer uses a tunnel several ways to typify a male child # 8217 ; s journey from childhood to going a adult male. First, the male child compares himself to some older native male childs as they swim in the ocean together. He dislikes how infantile he appears to them. He is determined to develop the submerged accomplishments required to finish the backbreaking undertaking of swimming through the under H2O tunnel as the indigens have done. He under goes many tests, concerns, and griefs but eventually accomplishes his end. Swiming through the tunnel, he emerges triumphantly on the other side with the pride of a adult male.

How is Cannery Row like a tidepool Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

How is Cannery Row like a tidepool - Essay Example When the tide comes in again, these creatures will scatter and forage for food elsewhere, but for the duration of the pool’s existence, they are close neighbors. John Steinbeck’s novel Cannery Row is a portrait of a place in a time, a collection of vignettes and subplots that gradually cohere into a rough narrative of local vagrants trying to do something nice for the local scientist. If it lacked even that fig leaf of a plot, though, it would still stand as a beautiful and moving evocation of Monterey, California in the early 1940s, when the Depression had declined elsewhere but that sweet wartime money had yet to wash up on Monterey’s shore. In this place, a motley collection of characters are thrown together, each of them making their way as best they can with what limited resources are available, living in a mutual web of dependence that lets them all continue to get by. Nobody in the story has a whole lot, but between them all, each person seems to manage to have just enough. Steinbeck’s moral stance on charity, kindness, and the necessity of doing right by one’s fellow man is firm enough that if you shelve one of his books next to one of Ayn Rand’s, they both explode. ... The wider world exists, but far away. Doc receives orders from distant cities and mails them out, Lee Chong hides out in San Francisco once in a while, the nearby town of New Monterey can be glimpsed here and there in the narrative, but for the most part the characters have no outside resources; in this tiny place called Monterey they are all in it together. The Monterey of the novel is a place where the tide went out a long time ago and has yet to come back in. The Great Depression has not yet ended for the characters, and even the relatively successful Lee Chong exists at the leading edge of a wave of unpaid debts that never quite breaks into bankruptcy. As the narration puts it, â€Å"maybe his wealth was entirely in unpaid bills.† Dora, who runs the local brothel called the Bear Flag, probably has the most pure liquid assets of anyone in the story, but she manages to retain surprisingly little of her substantial income, instead funneling it into the community via endless c harity. When the flu strikes Monterey in the middle of her busiest season on record, she and her girls become the nursing corps of the entire community, bringing soup and solace to the bedridden and ill all over town, including people who prefer to pretend her business doesn’t exist. The similarities between the community and the tidepool are many, but the central one is this: it is a very small ecosystem full of beings that did not ask to be clustered together like this. There is not a lot of anything to go around, and nobody can leave, at least not until the tide comes back in, and as observed, the tide has been out from Monterey for a long time. It is

The Problems Of The Women In Current World Essay

The Problems Of The Women In Current World - Essay Example Research has been done on the present situation of the wage gap in the US in the last decade and the improvements made in the last 30 to 40 after the enforcement of equal wages acts and the women’s movement in mid 20th century. Women are still considered as second-grade custody workers in various job sectors. A decade ago in the US, the women were still being paid low as compared to the men for the same job that they were doing. Women caretakers and cleaners have a salary widely disparate from that of men and all because of gender difference. A salary gap of 8000 US dollars separated the women’s yearly income (22000 US Dollars) form the men’s yearly income (30000 US Dollars). (Barko 1) Even after 5 decades since the enforcement of the Equal Payment Act of 1963, American women earned 74 cents for every dollar earned by men, according to the study published jointly by the AFL-CIO and The Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR), Washington (Barko 1). An increase in the wages of women task force employed across different industry sectors and in different categories would bring more than 50 % of low-income dual-earner and single-mother households above the poverty line. The recent study has challenged the age-old argument of lesser industry experience, childbearing time off and child rearing time off supporting the low income of women stating that 43 % of wage gap remains unexplained. After the industrial revolution in the late 19th and early 20th century, many new fields of work emerged and the professional world witnessed a boom. New posts were created, new organizations came into existence and new business lines became viable profit-making options.

Protecting our Environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Protecting our Environment - Essay Example Global warming and climate changes are the major outcomes of injudicious human activities. It is believed that sustainment of life in this world may become extremely difficult in near future itself if effective measures were not taken to counter environmental problems. Even though the size of the earth remains the same, global population is growing at alarming rates so that it may become extremely difficult for our earth to accommodate or cater the needs of all the people. As each individual contributes heavily to environmental problems, growth of population means growth of environmental problems also. In other words, population growth is directly proportional to environmental problems. As the world population grows, so does hazardous waste, toxic materials polluting our environment and affecting our eco-system. There should be a coordination effort by governments around the world to control pollution affecting our environment in order for human survival for future generations. Water pollution and preventive measures United States has many federal and state laws that have enacted to protect our water system and help regulate the amount of pollutants that affects our water. However, the implementation of these laws are not much effective so that American water sources are getting polluted more and more as time goes on. For example, Colorado River seems to be one of the major victims of environmental pollution in western American region. More than 30 million people use Colorado River as their major drinking water source. However, Colorado River is dying gradually because of environmental problems. â€Å"If climate change results in a 10 percent reduction in the Colorado River's average stream flow as some recent studies predict, the chances of fully depleting reservoir storage will exceed 25 percent by 2057, according to the study† (Future Of Western U.S. Water Supply Threatened By Climate Change, 2010) Irrigation projects are helping agricultural farming in America. However, water drained o ut of the agricultural lands may contain toxic ingredients because of the increased usages of fertilizers, chemicals and pesticides to improve the agricultural yields. Selenium seems to be the major harmful chemical content in irrigated water drained out of the agricultural lands. â€Å"When selenium uptake is too high health effects will be likely to come about. The health effects of various forms of selenium can vary from brittle hair and deformed nails, to rashes, heat, swelling of the skin and severe pains† (Selenium – Se, 2009). The Environmental Protection Agency, have supported and helped enforcement of water laws in our country and have introduced many laws concerning safe drinking water. The Clean Water Act (CWA) establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the United States and regulating quality standards for surface waters. The basis of the CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Contr ol Act, but the Act was significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name with amendments in 1977. Under the CWA, EPA has implemented pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry. CWA act was formulated for the purpose of preventing all types of

The Metamorphosis and Waiting for Godot Analysis | Dark humour in literature

The Metamorphosis and Waiting for Godot Analysis | Dark humour in literature Many writers have significantly utilized dark humor or black humor across various genres and time. Dark humor in Metamorphosis and Waiting For Godot have not only revealed to us through its various moments, ideas and issues that appeal to an audience at that time, but it also revealed to the readers and audience the nature of its characters. Although Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo and Lucky have been created almost like stock characters, we seem to understand through Samuel Becketts use of dark humor moments of Pathos, meaninglessness and stagnancy in their lives. Franz Kafka on the other hand creates a transformation in his main character, Gregor Samsa, by turning him into a mere insect and watching not only Samsas family but his reading audience react to it. The opening scene of Waiting For Godot is a country road setting with a single tree, and we find Estragon trying to remove his boots with both his hands. After much struggle, he says Nothing to be done as if removing his shoes was such a profound thing to be doing and therefore nothing could be done about his inability to remove his boots. A little later, as through out the play, each of them exchange dialogues that do not correspond or even connect to each other in any way. Estragon: Ah, stop blathering and help me off with this bloody thing Vladimir: handing hand from the top of Eiffel tower, among the first. We were presentable in those days. Now its too late. They wouldnt even let us up. All of these dialogues would have sent the audience into splits but they also resound with the inability of Vladimir and Estragon living a full and meaning life. Another example of black humor in this play is the part where Estragon talks about the Dead Sea and how the very thought of it made him thirsty. This creates a roar of laughter amongst the audience as Estragon talks about the Dead Sea in context to the Gospels. But, the reality is that the water form the Dead Sea will quench no thirst, as it is highly saline. This brings out Estragons naÃÆ' ¯ve character as he talks about the Dead Sea in comparison to the Gospels Estragon: The Dead Sea was pale blue. The very look of it made me thirsty. The entrance of Pozzo and Lucky on stage undoubtedly thrives on dark humor. Lucky is being led by a rope tied to his neck and pozzo says, Lets say no more. Up pig! Every time he falls, he falls asleep. Up hog! Back! Stop! Turn! These staccato instructions, almost army style, seem to evoke a laugh or at least smile amongst the audience or readers. However, the slavish Lucky seems to be put into a demeaning situation, which doesnt fail to catch the audiences attention. The return of Pozzo held by Lucky on a rope seems to create a reverse image of the earlier situation. This image brings a certain satisfaction to the audience, a laugh no doubt, and yet makes the audience aware of how fortune is fickle and can change with such a strong impact. The technique of contrast used by Beckett in Waiting For Godot is another attempt to bring out humor and reveal character. Estragons constant worry of who Godot is and when he will come and Vladimirs attempt to constantly calm his nerves, Vladimir: He said Saturday. I think. Estragon: You think. Pozzos initial arrogance and later his dependence on Lucky while he crawls onto stage are humorous ways of representing the characters. Becketts constant use of repetition of language and actions are humorous but stagnant. This is further intensified when Vladimir and Estragon have nothing to eat but a single carrot and a rotten turnip, Estragon Im hungry Vladimir: Do you want a carrot? Estragon: Is that all there is? Vladimir: I might have some turnips They seem to be holding on to their dignity later in the play when they meet Lucky and Pozzo. They do not show their hunger nor do they ask for food. But the moment Pozzo and Lucky leave the stage, Estragon picks up the eaten chicken bones, trying to get some sustenance out of it, Estragon makes a dart at the bones, picks them up and begins to gnaw on them. All these action and dialogues used by Beckett derive a sense of black humor but reveal to us simultaneously the sterile, meaningless and unfulfilled life of its characters. When Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from troubled dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous insect. The very opening lines of The Metamorphosis stated in this casual style does not fail to bring a smile to the readers. For who can wake up and find themselves transformed into an insect and not panic. Strangely, Gregor seems unaffected by this transformation, assuming life would go on with his spindly legs and squeaky voice. Kafka describes Gregor as this thing with a monstrous body and spindly legs. He has legs that dont seem to support him and neither is he aware how to use them. Kafkas humorous description of Gregor Samsa trying to get on those legs and out of the door and back to work, Groping for support, he fell down with a little cry on his numerous legs brings out a roar of laughter as he falls back on his back and cries out in a squeaky voice for help. Gregor gave a start when he heard his voiceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ irrepressible, painful squeaky The use of humor here reveals to us the helpless situation Samsa is trapped in and we as readers sympathize with this character. Later on in the book, Kafka describes how Samsas embarrassed father throws an apple at Gregors back and the apple sticks in the insects body It was an apple. Immediately, a second one flew after it. Gregor stood still in fright. Gregors serious wound, from which he suffered for over a month -since no one ventured to remove the apple, it remained in his flesh as a visible reminder. Although this seems visually funny, it draws upon the readers sympathy and empathy with Gregor. From this moment on G regor seems to deteriorate psychologically and physically and dies in a heap of dust, to be swept out and thrown into the trash by the Charwoman. At the end of The Metamorphosis Gregor Samsa is seen for the last time when he hears his sister playing the violin. He sneaks out of his room unaware that his current image not only frightened his family but also the lodgers who had come to stay as paying guests. Gregor attracted by playingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦. This episode not only reveals to us almost like children playing Peek-a-boo, a child like humor, but we readers have become pained at such a transformation of Gregor. We have also unmistakably recognized that his family members have transformed too into selfish, heartless human beings who refuse to call the insect their son or brother (in the sisters case): I will not utter my brothers name in front of this monster Thus, through the examination of the two books, Waiting For Godot and The Metamorphosis, it can be concluded that it is through dark humor that the authors have brought out the respective characteristics of the individuals depicted. For example, the blunt Estragon, the clam Vladimir, the dominant Pozzo, the slavish Lucky or the tragic Samsa, all of these characteristics are brought out through the help of dark humor. We have encountered them all through humorous events, descriptions and pictures.

Loss of Innocence in Heart of Darkness Essay -- Heart Darkness essays

Loss of Innocence in Heart of Darkness      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Heart of Darkness is Joseph Conrad's tale of one man's journey, both mental and physical, into the depths of the wild African jungle and the human soul. The seaman, Marlow, tells his crew a startling tale of a man named Kurtz and his expedition that culminates in his encounter with the "voice" of Kurtz and ultimately, Kurtz's demise. The passage from Part I of the novel consists of Marlow's initial encounter with the natives of this place of immense darkness, directly relating to Conrad's use of imagery and metaphor to illustrate to the reader the contrast between light and dark. The passage, although occurring earlier on in the novel, is interspersed with Marlow's two opposing points of view: one of naà ¯vetà ©, which comes before Marlow's eventual epiphany after having met Kurtz, and the matured perspective he takes on after all of the events leading up to his and Kurtz's encounter.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Almost immediately after the start of the passage, the reader is exposed to the prejudices of the white inhibitors. The indigenous people of the area are repeatedly compared to animals, dehumanizing them and depriving them of the common respect that all people deserve, regardless of race or creed. On page 24, Marlow says "A lot of people, mostly black and naked, moved about like ants." Reinforcing this idea, he lends them other animal-like qualities, calling the sickly ones "creatures" and describing their movements as being "off on all fours...to drink," and even the act of drinking is described as the native having "lapped out of his hand," reminiscent of something a dog would do (28).      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Another interesting employment of language used by... ...s of the jungle, which sought to swallow him whole like the snake devouring its prey, sending it deeper within its body digesting it by stripping it of its layers one by one, paralleling the snake-like qualities of the river that drew Marlow deeper and deeper into its dark nothingness. And just like the Ancient Mariner, who is doomed to tell his tale for the rest of his life for the sake of penitence, Marlow, too, seems to retell his story of the tragic loss of innocence, of death and rebirth. Regardless of how many times the story had been told before it got to the narrator who eventually transcribed the events, it is one of great importance. It tells us that we must not judge a book by its cover, regardless of how convinced we may be of what is inside.    Works Cited Conrad, Joseph. Heart of Darkness. Family and Delinquency Essay

How is it developed and how is it Solved? Introduction â€Å"Abuse† and â€Å"violence† are considered to be terms that are believed to be the understatement of the actual situation that is happening in the society right now. It could be observed that through the years, the number of individuals being victimized by the said dilemma are undeniably increasing making the word â€Å"abuse† not just a word but one among the many things that people within the human society fear most. Abuse is the way by which people try to maltreat their fellowmen. This is regardless of the fact that the people being maltreated are either their friends or their family members as well. It could not be denied that this dreadful situation have affected the sections of human socialization already. The school institutions, the workplace, the churches and now even within homes, the existence of abuse cannot be much controlled anymore. This is primarily the reason why it is very important to take several things regarding this particular issue into consideration for studying. This would naturally allow a more focused procedure that shall be developed to assist abused victims both young and old, men and women to recover from the situation that they have been involved with when they were abused in the past. It is pretty much appalling to know how a highly established society could be afflicted by the different effects of the abusive acts that are brought about as one of the major disadvantages of the advancements of the society. What are the sources of these major abuses? Most likely, as psychologists and sociologists point out, people are moved to create possible ways of releasing their tension regarding several experiences through afflicting the security of others. Most of those who are noted as the ones victimizing others have been once victims themselves. On their own way then, they are trying to release the depression and the pain that they are afflicted with through passing on the dreadful situation to others as revenge to those who have once victimized them. The abusive acts and their effects on the victim do not end on the actual act of abusing alone. The results of the said incidents account for further impact on the personality of the victim primarily pertaining on his or her social interaction with the community that he lives with. Most likely, isolation and the feeling of lesser self-worth eventually develop. It could not be denied that these results are hardly expected by the victims before they were involved with the abuse that they were faced with. Certainly, it is through the memories of the abuse that the pain tends to remain in complete control of the victim’s major dealings with the society. At some point, the said victims tend to become socially avoiding as they actually fear that the same thing might happen to them again in the hands of other people that they may or may not know. The trust that they used to have on other people before they were victimized eventually fades making it harder for them to recover on the past that they have experienced. The World Reports and What They Pertain to According to worldwide reports, there are several abusive acts that are taken against the â€Å"weak ones† in a daily basis. Depressingly, the numbers of the victims never cease to stop. Even though there is a strong push on the making of the different laws and ordinances that are designed to protect people from being abused on the places that they are living or working in, it is undeniable that there is still a considerable annual rise to the rate of the population becoming victims of the said dreadful situation. As mentioned above, there are numerous types of abuses that plagues the society today. With the influences of media and other publications that provoke both sexual desires and violence, the desires of people to do something awful to others to simply comply to the thirst that they feel for themselves and the satisfaction that they ought to reach become much vivid and harder to avoid. Hence, pushing the abusers to come up with destructive acts that bring others into a devastating situation. It could be noted too through psychological studies that one cause of the ways by which people are moved to follow a certain path that leads them to abusing others actually involve depression and in depth disregard of one’s self. Most of the time, when depression and stress takes over the mental system of a particular person, the deciding power of the person begins to weaken hence making it possible for him to take massive steps of destructive acts that usually lead to them abusing other people. Yes, frustrations and unfulfilled missions or aims bring much depression on human individuals. When this depression is treated in the wrong manner, the situation becomes harder to control. Psychologists particularly note this as one of the failures of the nervous system to assist one in righteously deciding for what is supposed to be acceptably right to do when hard-to-deal with circumstances arise. The said failure gradually affects to one loosing his control over his actions. Add to the fact that there are those who take addictive substances that are directly affecting their decision-making capabilities thus making it harder for them to judge of whether what they are doing are right or not. The Personal Effects of Abuse and Violence As mentioned earlier, violence and abuse are two related terms that describe the destructive situation that most people who are less able to protect themselves experience on the hands of the oppressive sector of the human population. Hence, through the study that has been presented above, it could be noted that the results of the said incidents may either be positive or negative on the part of the individual that has been victimized by the said situation. The result becomes positive when the victims primarily learns how to defend himself the next time that the same situation occurs or in some way he or she has already learned to protect themselves from actually being involved in destructive situations based on the experience that they once had. On the contrary, the results may become negative if the victim begins to view the situation as an incident that could bring her or him to a fearful state against the systems of the human society. The state of isolation becomes and self-rejection is then added to the negative results of the said incidents. Involving the Family Amidst all the successes that the society achieves through the existence of technology and communication, it is quite disturbing how the situation of the most important sector of the society suffers so much. Family, as the basic unit of the social relationships, is the one receiving the most negative effects of technological and industrial advancements. Intimacy and attachment has been much a hard case to deal with when dealing especially with the modern married couples. The thoughts of long ago regarding the long-run relationship that marriage is supposed to be had been gradually changed by the fact that system of the society today have already changed as well. The priorities and the goals of individuals have already been exchanged with the need of being economically successful in the field of their own chosen careers. Sadly, although both men and women are aware that they were meant to share a special relationship based on love, only few are able to realize to understand the reality of the vows that they give at the brink of their wedding ceremonies. Marriage, as a â€Å"human contract† is a special bond that should be considered as a serious link between two people who are bounded by love. However, at some point, the view of marriage has been changed during the present era. Because of the social changes, marriage has been subjected to different challenges. Today, conflicts are directly bombarded towards the relationship of married couples that in turn makes the situation much harder to deal with. As a result, many among those couples simply end up in divorce. For many years, it has been a standard definition of a family to be referred to as a group of people who are related to each other and are thus bonded together by blood. The attachment within the said group goes beyond just the existence of a common blood, but it is further linked stronger through the existence of love. With the said advancements though of the society, the family is further subjected to facing several issues that concerns the strength of its ties. . Since time is lacking, the members of the family are having a hard time creating time for themselves to at least deal with each other through communication, in turn, intimacy is lost. This is specifically true with parents, or married couples. Because of the time that they devote to their jobs, they usually find it hard to balance their time to give each other attention for the sake of the development of their relationship. As a result, the love that they once have lost the love that they once had for each other because of lack of time, communication and intimacy, their relationship’s solidity begins to drift away. On the contrary though, Donna and Roger are among the couples who are able to meet the challenges of marriage amidst all the challenges both personal and familial that are presented to the society nowadays. Although there had been some rough portions of their marriage, it could be noted through the interview that they have managed to set through their differences and were able to make adjustments so as to give themselves some room to improve as individuals and as couples. It is undeniable that being married at a young age is something that is much harder to deal with that dealing with simply the challenges of marriage itself. Aside from all the financial problems, personal adjustments certainly needed to be given attention especially on the part of the interviewees. The highlights of their relationship could be noted to have nothing to do with gaining surmountable amounts of wealth but with that of being together with their family. Seeing things in a simpler manner makes it easier for young couples to see life in a much less-complicated matter of life. It is through this that they are able to give importance to the more caring to better things that wealth itself. True, they recognize that material gains add up to the happiness of the family since it gives the members a chance to enjoy the things they want without limits at least. However, this does not mean that the happiness of family members does not only rely on the influence of money at all. Instead, real family happiness relies on the fact that family members are still able to connect with each other through communication and simply by just being together amidst the busy schedules that each member of the family deals with regarding their work or school activities as well as house chores. Making sure that each member is given the attention that they need from the family is an important key to family success. A Therapeutic Approach The Family Assessment Device has been designed to measure improvements concerning the Family Therapy. In a busy and complicated world that families have to deal with these days, it is very vital every family be able to face the challenges of today’s world. Although at times, the hardships that families has to face makes it difficult for its members to keep close and intact relationship with each other. Aside from this, the results of such a complicated life leads to different emotional and physical depressions which makes it harder for every family member to comprehend to each other’s needs and be able to cope with life’s changes at the same time. This is why many families chose to undergo several family therapies to be able to solve the growing gap between their members and thus lead a better family life. The Family Assessment Device includes six major dimensions that are connected to family functioning. The said six major scopes of the said assessment device are the problem solving, communication, roles, effective responsiveness, effective involvement and behavioral control. The dimension on Problem Solving intends to measure the capability of a family to be able to face and solve certain problems that arise within the family. With the use of questionnaires having four possible responses on agreeing to the solutions suggested and disagreeing, each family is scaled depending on their answers. The other dimensions as well follow the same pattern of questionnaires. After answering the questions, each result shall be averaged, evaluated and concluded regarding the improvements of the family in the therapies they undergo. The standard results for the Family Assessment Device which concludes that the family has already improved through the family therapy is based on how well they have comprehended with the activities they undergo during the therapy. There are major ways on how to evaluate the changes in a family. One is through the statistical significance of changes observed, another is through the percentage of dropping below clinical cut-offs and finally through the magnitude of change between intake and termination. These three major evaluation processes helps the psychologists to scale the improvements that the family being observed has already incurred. Many experts have proved the reliability of tests and family assessments such as the Family Assessment Device effective. True, at times, the application of this assessment may not be that easy but the cooperation of the family under therapy programs would really help in making assessments such as this a successful program. At times, there might be some family members who would rather depend on their own understanding of the problems they are facing than referring their problems to experts. Usually, this makes the FAD application harder to apply, but as said earlier, constant assistance and assurance to the families that they are being helped and not exploited or whatsoever, the Family Assessment could be concluded to be successful. Conclusion As it could be noted through the studies and discussion presented above, the result of violence and abuse upon the victim simply depends on his or her perception of the situation that occurred. Someone who is strong and wise enough in facing life’s challenges may look at this particular experience as a lesson that would teach him to take full responsibility of the situation the next time that the same thing happens. However, a person who is actually frail in facing the surprises that life has to offer would break down upon experiencing certain devastating incidents. Yes, it is one’s development as a person and perception towards life and the challenges that it brings that would actually determine the ways by which an individual would be affected by violence or abuse. It is only through a person’s discretion that the effects of the said situations could be identified within the growth progress that that particular person would undergo. It is also upon the person’s discretion as to how he or she would actually allow the said incident to impact her personality as well as her social dealings. In the end, yes, it will all depend on the person afflicted by the situation. References: Sexual Victimization,† Child Abuse and Neglect, 18 (1994):303–318. Limits on U.S. Military Involvement in Humanitarian Crises essays

Limits on U.S. Military Involvement in Humanitarian Crises essays The primary purpose of setting up armed forces of any country is to ensure the stability of the nation in times of war. Further to this mission is to defend the country against foreign or domestic (with regulations) aggression. Hence, the military is there to conduct offensive and defensive combat operations as mandated by the chain of command. The United States military establishment especially has a long tradition of war fighting capabilities and history, but in some areas it has been called upon to handle humanitarian missions such as peacekeeping, relief operations, infrastructure buildup and related stability operations. The 1990s was the first decade in nearly half a century in which the U.S. military was deployed on missions that involved the reconstruction of governments, infrastructure, and economies after quelling the chaos of internecine conflicts. (Serafino, 2006) Majority of humanitarian missions involve peacekeeping duties and during a humanitarian intervention, the mi litarys mission is expected to derive from the U.S. national security strategy.1 The objective could be to support U.S. interests on behalf of allies, public concern, to support democracy, etc. These objectives are often different from those of the humanitarian action organizations involved, especially those of NGOs and IGOs. (Hinson, 1998) The involvement of the U.S. military in whatever humanitarian missions is still dependent on the National Command Authority. Although the missions are altruistic and serves a more positive output rather than the natural warfighting premise, humanitarian missions taxed the capability of the military from what their actual missions are. As Serafino reports (2006): For well over a decade, some Members of Congress expressed reservations about U.S. military involvement in peacekeeping operations. The Bush Administration initially opposed such missions and took steps to reduce the commitment o...

Free Essays on The Saccheri Quadrilateral

The Saccheri Quadrilateral Saccheri was a Jesuit priest who lived from 1667 to 1733. Before he passed away he published a book entitled Euclides ab omni nà ¦vo vidicatus. (Euclid Freed of Every Flaw). Saccheri suggested that for a line and a point, there are three possibilities. The first is that there is exactly one line through the point parallel to the given line. The second, there is no line through the point parallel to the given line. The third is more than one line through the point parallel to the given line. Saccheri investigated the summit angles of a quadrilateral; his result depended on the postulate chosen. He tried to find a contradiction to prove that Euclids fifth postulate was true. He assumed the negation of the parallel Postulate and tried to arrive at a contradiction. He studied a family of quadrilateral that have come to be called Saccheri quadrilateral. Saccheri tried to find a contradiction; he started with postulates other than Euclids. He didn’t find one, so he still claimed that Euclids was freed from all defects. Although Saccheri’s work did have on flaw. Many historians praised Saccheri’s book of 39 theorems. The first 70 pages is an ensemble of logic and geometric keenness, which can be called perfect. But all of a sudden Saccheri abruptly turns away from his carefully plotted course. In his 33rd theorem is where his flaw can be found. This is where h he breaks away from his strict logic and carefully crafted perfect work. He remarks â€Å"†¦ but this contrary to our intuitive knowledge of a straight line†. Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 12

Economics - Essay Example Interest rates are used as tools by central banks to control inflation. When Bank believes inflation is beginning to rise, it raises interest rates to cool the economy and vice versa. Therefore, the long term affect of raising interest rate will be to reduce inflation. For the constructers of apartments, this might mean relatively cheaper production due to cheaper cost of resources. The supply curve will therefore shift to the right (fig.4). Constructers will be able to provide more value for the same price to the customers. Also, many of the customers who might have refused to invest in property initially when the interest price increased would now be more in terms with the market and willing to invest. In the longer run, increased interest rate would have made its impact of controlling inflation and prices for other goods would be more stable. All these factors would result in increasing the demand and would result in a shift in demand curve to the right

Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management Assignment - 3

Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management - Assignment Example Fromt his paper it is clear that for the business plans that are externally focused, tend to include what is relevant to the external stakeholders, especially financial stakeholders. The externally focused business plan will be more focused on the team driving the business plan and financial performance. Internally focused business plans are intended to focus the organization in meeting their intermediate goals. These plans may include plans to develop new products, introduction of new services, internal restructuring, partnerships etc. that is required to reach the external goals. They may cover the development of a new product, a new service, a new IT system, a restructuring of finance, the refurbishing of a factory or a restructuring of the organization. This study outlines that business plans can be used as decision making tools. Business plans in this case can help the organization stay focused in meeting its goals. During conflicts of investment directions, the business plan can be used to guide new investments, since the business plan is a representation of all the business aspects as it will show the marketing, operational, financial and human resourcing plan.  The preparation of a business plan draws people from diverse fields as one field is not sufficient enough to achieve the objectives of any business. Disciplines involved in the development of a business plan include: marketing, operation management, finance, management, and human resource, supply chain management, etc.... The preparation of a business plan draws people from diverse fields as one field is not sufficient enough to achieve the objectives of any business. Disciplines involved in the development of a business plan include: marketing, operation management, finance, management, and human resource, supply chain management, etc. Therefore the development of any business plan should be inclusive so as to gain from the knowledge and expertise of other fields (Stevenson & Gumpert, 1985, pp.85-94). 2. Idea generation A business idea can be defined as a concept to be developed and used to start a commercial venture. The concept can be about a service or a product that can be transformed into revenue generation. The business idea is the seed for a business venture without it, there is no business. Not everyone is endowed with business idea generation capabilities, idea scan be generated by an individual or as a group. The idea has to be modelled to make it viable for a business venture. Before start ing a business, an idea has to be developed and tested. Ideas can be tested by feasibility studies and piloting. If the tests prove viable then the business can start. Feasibility studies helps to sharpen business ideas as it brings the idea closer to reality from an idealistic position. At the same time, an idea can be good, tested and proved to be viable, however if the timing of implementation is bad, then the business will fail. Therefore the timing for business start should also be right (Stevenson & Gumpert, 1985, pp.85-94). 3. Strategic objectives The strategic objectives part of the business plan is focused on addressing how the company intends to get where they are going, defines the broad approach to the achievement of the

Procurement Management Plan for Laces Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Procurement Management Plan for Laces - Essay Example It also throws light on the procedure of endorsement of agreement and decision making strategy. Approach: The plan should define plainly the compulsory stages and duties thought the life of the company. The company manager work with the project team, contract, purchasing department and vendors to go through different stages of the plan, and make sure that the plan should be able to guide the company in the effective termination of the project. Definition: The procurement definition identifies clearly the articles to be acquired and states associated circumstances. Procurement deadlines are also clearly defined which is very necessary for the effective accomplishment of the assignment. Thus in the definition articles to be procured should be listed, justification given, conditions stated and any other specification required must also be described. The names of the persons must also be given who can approve the purchase etc. in the absence of the manager. Table I: Shows the articles/se rvices to be procured, rationalization and deadline. Article/Service Rationalization Deadline 1. Laces Required for the shoes and its preparation is very costly 1 October 2011 2. Studded soles Required for the completion of the shoes and its preparation is very time consuming 1 October 2011 3. ... The articles required in this case are usually procured by firm-fixed price contract. The project team specifies the articles, their amounts, services and deadlines. The purchasing department calls bids from different vendors according to the specifications and deadlines. It also bargains the price of the articles with the selected vendor according to the firm-fixed price. Contract accomplishment procedure: The contract execution procedure varies greatly among different companies but it is very important to specify all the rules for finalizing a contract relating to procurement with the company. The authorities which will be involved in decision making should also be mentioned. First of all it is decided that which articles are to be procured. After making decisions about the items to be procured based on the cost analysis, the purchasi ng department will call for bids from different vendors. Different vendors will send proposals which will be reviewed to see which proposal is according to the criteria set out by the project team and purchasing department and offers lowest price. It is also decided that up to what amount the project manager can approve the purchase and the purchases greater than that amount will require the approval of The Contract Review Board. This Contract Review Board usually consists of agents of the project team, purchasing department, finance and project manager office. Decision making criteria: The standard which is used by the contract review board/project manager for the selection and award of contracts differs from company to company. Women in Vietnam Essay Example for Free

Women in Vietnam Essay In Vietnam, women were encouraged to serve within the government and other sectors within the state. Unlike in other countries where women are stereotyped as being weak, in Vietnam, it was different. (Insun, p47-p56) Women were treated as equals. They were given the same positions as those ones of women and were given the same respect. Women were especially encouraged to take up the jobs which were believed to be a man’s reserve. They went out of their way to serve their country as humanitarians, entertainers, military dependents, USAID, civilian nurses, in military, as correspondents and in special services. (Insun, p78-p80) There were a good number of women in Vietnam who served as professionals in the field of medicine, teaching, law, professional nurses, controllers of air traffic, language and intelligence specialists, photographers, physical therapists, aerial reconnaissance, legal officers, security officers and administrative positions. Civilian women in Vietnam also served in the Red Cross, journalists, humanitarian organizations and as flight attendants. They were also leaders in the churches. (Chen, p78) Despite the fact that these women were active then, they kept a low profile. Today, nobody can tell who these women are. This is because they don’t show off and have camouflaged. Women made very noble contributions towards the wars in Vietnam. They fought alongside men and did everything men did and they in fact did it a better. (Insun, p34-p67) It has been said that if the country of Vietnam must heal, women must come forward to reveal their involvements and experiences in the war. Unfortunately, they have not been recognized and acknowledged as significant in the history of Vietnam. The situation has been worsened by their silence and the pain and struggles kept deep within them. Women do not believe that they deserve the same recognition and respect like that given to men. (Woodside, p678) Women in special services were mostly under the army. These armies as well as civilians were under the employees’ defense department. The departments that were served by women were related to recreation and morale and included the bases of the Army in the states. (Song, p456) Most of the divisions were also related to works of arts and crafts, service clubs, libraries, movies, sports and entertainment. These women administered special programs, for example, ‘Rest’ as well as the program relating to recreation. The reason why women were entrusted with these positions was their warm hearted nature. They were icon of hope to the whole of Vietnam; they had a role of encouraging men and giving them morale during wars. They ensured that the homes did not fall apart despite their involvements in other services. Women were good volunteers in these services and they had the welfare of the country and the people in mind. It was not a burden to serve their country since they could see the big picture. (Taylor, p267) As librarians, women gave magazines, books and newspapers to the soldiers. The books served as sources of the correspondent courses they were taking and also for leisure. Most of their wonderful memories were hopping flights, clubs, time shared with friends as well as the loved ones. However, there were still some enmities created during the early days. Women fought wars along the beautiful coastline and peaceful villages and rice fields. These areas were My Lai, Chu Lai, the Que Son Valley, A Shau, Da Nang, Phu Bai and hue. Women witnessed the demise of thousands five bases as well as landing zones. (Woodside, p567) At the military, women served with pride. They knew that their efforts were for a worthy cause. They knew that their victory was a victory for all. During the women’s anniversary, they gathered their past and present achievements. There were at least one thousand and two hundred soldiers selected from the women population and served as band leaders and translators, clerks and typists. (Insun, p78)

Emily Bronte and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning :: Biography Biographies Essays

Emily Bronte and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning      Ã‚  Ã‚   As I looked through the literary works we have covered this term I noticed that there were only two strong females we have studied that seem to play a strong part in the development of British Literature. Emily Bronte and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning were strong, influential figures in the literary world.    Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights can be credited with the title of the first Romantic novel of its time and her poetry was also redefining the poetry of the era. Unintentionally, I believe, Emily set a new standard for writing. Her use of nature, an undefined hero and heroine, the unusual structure of narrators, and her portrayal of the supernatural powers within the plot all contribute to her literary groundbreaking, trend setting style. Her poetry is also unique in that it has a personal flair not typically seen in previous poets. It is a very personal reflection of what she is enduring at the moment. That interpretation, however, is not entirely clear without the historical context.   "A little while, a little while, The noisy crowd are barred away; I can sing and I can smile A little while I've a holyday!" (WH 296) could be interpreted as any number of things without the reader being fully aware that at this point in her life Bronte was a trapped in a job she hated far from her beloved home and family. She was a governess. In that light it makes her poem makes complete sense; she needed to get away from the children she was responsible for. Several of her other poems were also born of this time in her life and reflected her homesickness.    Elizabeth Barrett-Browning too wrote about her life but I saw her work as more direct and open than that of Bronte. Without the historical knowledge of Bronte's life at the time of her writing her poems are beautiful but the reader cannot fully appreciate the emotive elements behind the words. Barrett-Browning's works were much clearer as to their intent and even without a working knowledge of her relationship with Robert Browning the reader can fully appreciate the powerful dramatic emotions flowing through her words. Her most famous sonnet "How do I love thee?

Labor Rate

Labor rate variance is the difference between the actual labor rate and the applied overhead rate (standard rate multiplied by the number of actual hours worked). Consider this and respond to the following: †¢Ã¢â‚¬ Our workers are all under labor contracts. Therefore, our labor rate variance is bound to be zero. † Do you agree or disagree that the labor rate variance will be zero if all workers are under labor contracts? Explain giving reasons. The concept of labor rate variance and its application are accurately identified and explained with pertinent examples. The labor rate variance is the difference between the actual labor rate paid and the standard rate, multiplied by the number of actual hours worked. The formula is: Actual rate – Standard rate x Actual hours worked = Labor rate variance. An unfavorable variance means that the cost of labor was more expensive than anticipated, while a favorable variance indicates that the cost of labor was less expensive than planned. There are a number of possible causes of a labor rate variance. The labor rate variance will not be zero because workers ate under contract. Wage rates paid to workers are quite predictable. Nevertheless, rate variances can arise because of the way labor is used. Skilled workers with high hourly rates of pay may be given duties that require little skill and call for lower hourly rates of pay. This will result in an unfavorable labor rate variance, since the actual hourly rate of pay will exceed the standard rate specified for the particular task. In contrast, a favorable rate variance would result when workers who are paid at a rate lower than specified in the standard are assigned to the task. However, the lower-paid workers may not be as efficient. Finally, overtime work at premium rates will result in an unfavorable rate variance if the overtime premium is charged to the direct labor account. Direct labor variance is the difference between the standard cost and the actual cost of production. Considering this, answer the questions that follow: †¢What effect, if any, would you expect poor quality materials to have on direct labor variances? If poor quality materials create production problems, a result could be excessive labor time and therefore an unfavorable labor efficiency variance. Poor quality materials would not ordinarily affect the labor rate variance †¢How must a company plan to mitigate the risks associated with direct labor variances? The standard labor rate established by a company is an average, usually pertaining to average quality workers. Newly hired workers will likely get paid less which creates a favorable labor rate variance. They will also work more slowly than more experienced workers creating an unfavorable labor efficiency variance. The opposite is true if a company employs highly skilled workers The production supervisor hires production workers and assigns each a wage rate. He is able to give them raises and terminate them if necessary. For this reason, if a labor rate exists, we inquire with the production supervisor to try to determine the variance cause. The production supervisor oversees the production workers and monitors the efficiency with which each of these workers works. For this reason, if a labor efficiency exists, we inquire with the production supervisor to try to determine the variance cause

Breast cancer reflection

The finding was made through a study from the Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program at Michigan State University, which indicated that before any umors appear, there are changes in the breast that include increased cell growth and alterations in immune cells. I believe this is a great topic for a health science class for students, has many other broader areas of work and subject to further discuss such disease and preventions that can be made and helps teachers have more knowledge as to what diseases can be prevented from articles like this one..This article helps a lot in a health science class. In health science it is important to teach students the different diseases that are killing many out there and the early reventions that can help reduce the risk of it become a disease, in this case, cancer. In a health science class, we can discuss food groups and differentiate what are high fat diet foods. Also, we can deeply discuss puberty, which usually half of them know, b ecause even their parents are too shy to discuss such topic.Sometimes students see changes in their body and have no idea why, and I think this subject links puberty to a well discussed topic in a classroom. Finally, being able to discuss breast cancer, and other cancers can link a great topic for a health science class, discussing hat is a cancer, how it develops, how it is reduced and moreover and most important, how it can be prevented.Discussing about how high fat diet plans during puberty increases the risk of breast cancer, we as teachers can link this topic in other subject so students grasp the information, share it with their families and spread what can save a life in their community. In English, writing essays as to how you would inform the community of what high fat diet during puberty can cause can link the topic. In social studies, students can be engaged in the global social month of cancer awareness which is in the month of October. And finally linking health science with English, and social studies, to help more and broaden such article, we can engage in different arts and craft that visually help to explain students and others of how we help in cancer awareness, know what it is and how we can spread the word. Articles like this one are very important to students and teachers for the betterment of self-knowledge and also to help the community. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.We have made a lot f progress but still have a long way to go and articles like these make us have a broader idea of what can cause it and instead of finding ways to prevent it, once and for all be able to avoid it by taking the necessary steps to live better, longer and healthier. Students, females in this case are able to also avoid un-healthy dietary plans and take more care ot them and us as teachers not only help increase the cancer k nowledge of what can cause it to our students but moreover help our students share the information and make our community help a nation with more information flowing for the betterment of everyone.
